Rainy Market Tips

Rainy Market Tips

Last weekend we had one of the wettest market day we've had for a while! Back when I first started I'd use shower curtains to help stop the rain from reaching my stock, but since then I've upgraded to clear tarps - they allow some light through to the stall while also blocking the rain.

Here are my top five recommendations for rainy market days:

  1. Clear tarps and strong market pegs - cover the stall from the rain before you start unloading your precious stock and turn over the market stall boards if they're already damp. I like to attach my tarp over the gap between me and my neighbour so we have a nice dry alleyway between us. Clear tarp = natural light coming through to your stall.
  2. Gazebo rain gutters - great for when you're trading next to someone you know so you can still have a natter/open up the are a bit and keep an eye on each others stalls when needed. Also great for the pesky gap between you and your neighbouring market stall - the roofs doesn't always cover the gap when you're attached to each other.
  3. Have a towel or some microfibre cloths to dry the stall frame (so your stock doesn't get dripped on) and your stock (my coasters normally need a bit of a wipe, and sometimes the card sleeves too!)
  4. Empty your stall roof of water (slowly and carefully so you and your stall don't get soaked) if you leave it too long wind can catch the water and dump it on unsuspecting browsers! You can push the stall up with your hand to help drain the water or use a long umbrella and push the roof wile hiding under the other half of the stall.
  5. Try to have fun! Rainy market days can be a bit miserable, but I find that chatting to other stall holders and any people that brave the rain makes the day much better.
